 PORTUGAL ESCOLA SECUNDARIA MEALHADA

Three Colleges

The first College in Mealhada was founded in 1909 by Reverend Dr. António Antunes Breda, located on the old Rua dos Carris. In the late 1950s, a new college called Externato D. Afonso Henriques, located in a building almost opposite the CP station, began operating to replace the first one. Increasing participation in the Externato, lack of reasonably equipped laboratories, demand for new pedagogies etc. has caused the Ministry of Education to threaten to close the College unless the new building project is submitted urgently. and construction. A series of goodwill around Father António Breda of Comendador Messias Baptista, Father Manuel de Almeida, Major Carlos Gonçalves Ferreira and others succeeded in combining efforts and raising the necessary capital to build the new Mealhada College. Building Construction Studies began in 1961, despite the skepticism of many. In the newspaper "Sol da Bairrada" of June 29, 1963, Major Gonçalves Ferreira stated: "...They continued to say that even if the foundations and walls were removed, they would not continue, there was money; the partners did not understand each other, and tomorrow a factory, maybe a hotel would have been, but it would never have been a College...". The building project was designed by architect José Augusto Alves de Moura Cardoso and is still considered a well-designed building from an architectural point of view. The facilities cost 5000 contos (in 1962), took 3600 tons of stone into the foundations and resulted in a closed area of 1960 m2. Opening On October 6, 1963, the new building was opened, where the Instituto Liceal e Técnico de Sant'Ana started working with the participation of: Undersecretary of National Education; The Civil Governor of Aveiro, Dr. Manuel Louzada; Mayors of Mealhada, Anadia and Ovar; Inspector of Foz High Schools in Coimbra and Figueira; Professors, Partners and Institute Directors. According to the newspapers of the period, students, family members and the general public also participated. The front page headline of the newspaper "Sol da Bairrada" in November 1963 was "The opening party of the Instituto de Sat'Ana da Mealhada was glorious". For its meaning, it's worth remembering the last words the newspaper used in its opening report: "The newly built building, in the splendor of its lines, was there to tell future generations what the people of today are doing. The generation in Mealhada held an immortal victory standard dedicated to the cause of teaching so high and generous. He knew how to join hands in a burst of enthusiasm to raise it somehow."
